چکیده

The absolute temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) has been measured at a frequency of 1280 MHz. The observation was made with a modified version of the L-band receiver used in the Giant Metre wavelength Radio Telescope (GMRT): the feed horn was replaced by a corrugated plate and the receiver was placed on the ground, directed at zenith, and shielded from ground radiation by an aluminium screen with corrugated edges. Novel techniques have been adopted for (1) reducing and cancelling unwanted contributions to the system temperature of the receiver and (2) calibrating the contributions from the feed assembly and receiver. The thermodynamic temperature of the CMB is estimated to be 3.45 ± 0.78 K.

Arcade 2 Measurement of the Extra - Galactic Sky Temperature at 3 - 90 Ghz

The ARCADE 2 instrument has measured the absolute temperature of the sky at frequencies 3, 8, 10, 30, and 90 GHz, using an open-aperture cryogenic instrument observing at balloon altitudes with no emissive windows between the beam-forming optics and the sky. An external blackbody calibrator provides an in situ reference. Systematic errors were greatly reduced by using differential radiometers a...

A Detection of Bright Features in the Microwave Background

We report the characterization of bright, compact features in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) detected during the June 1992 and June 1994 balloon flights of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1-92 and MSAM1-94, respectively). Spectral flux densities are determined for each feature at 5.7, 9.3, and 16.5 cm. No viable counterparts for these features were found in source...

The Temperature of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation at 3.8 GHz; Results of a Measurement from the South Pole Site

As part of an international collaboration to measure the low frequency spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, we have measured its temperature at a frequency of 3.8 GHz (7.9 cm wavelength), during the austral spring of 1989, obtaining a brightness temperature, TCMB, of 2.64k0.07 K (68% confidence level). The new result is in agreement with our previous measurements at the ...

Probing beyond the Epoch of Hydrogen Reionization with 21 Centimeter Radiation

We use numerical simulations of hydrogen reionization by stellar sources in the context of ΛCDM cosmogonies to investigate the 21 (1+ z) cm radio signal expected from the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) prior to the epoch of reionization breakthrough at redshift zion. Two reionization scenarios are analyzed in details: an ‘early reionization’ case with zion ≈ 13, consistent with the recent d...
